CNN Report on how Objet 3D Printers are Changing the Design Process

CNN Money published a compelling report showing how Architecture and Design professionals are using Objet 3DPrinters to transform their design process. The report showcases Rietveld Architects. Using their Objet Printer, they have shaved months off of their model building time.

3D Printing takes another step forward

I was told this morning that CATI is now partnered with Objet to sell their new Alaris30 Desktop 3D  Printer.  I started doing my research and this stuff is outstanding!! This small desktop sized printer is capable of delivering very high resolution parts at high speed to get detailed parts quickly that can be used effectively for testing form and function.

The most exciting aspect of this, for me at least, is the ability to  generate that very fine detail that previously was only possible for much more expensive machines.  Take a look at the machine when you get a chance.  I think you'll be impressed.

Does your VRML file look jagged?

With the increasing popularity and interest in rapid prototyping, one of the file formats used for the ZCorp printer is VRML.  This file type allows us to print our parts with color, but when you save the part file there is no options to control the quatlity of the file.  This is actually controled by the image quality setting in SolidWorks system options under the document properties.  The higher the image quality the smoother the lines.  Therefore, next time you are printing parts on a ZCorp printer and have a lot of rough edges on your parts check your image quality before saving your VRML file.
